Winter Scouting Events

Erik and Kylan are in Cub Scouts and enjoy a lot of fun activities.  The two featured events below are the skating outing at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and Pinewood Derby.  Erik wasn't able to join us for skating because he had strep throat but Kristofer was able to tag along.  Erik and Kylan had cars shaped like a Wii remote and nunchuck.  Brian carved the cars using his new Dremel tool but it was a lot of work at the last minute.  The secret to a successful car is in the tires and axel but we didn't do well there.

This was Kristofer's first time skating and he had no fear.  He fell as soon as he hit the ice and then tried to get to this pylon to help him skate.  Our camera can do rapid shutter so this sequence only took about 5 seconds.  Fortunately he got up with a big smile on his face.

By the end of the day though, he was skating pretty well	Kylan didn't need the pylons but he grabbed this one anyway
Kylan has skated a couple times and did pretty well	But he did take a little tumble this time and actually did a backward summersault on this fall - very graceful!
Kylan's car looked good but failed to reach the finish line on his first run; he took last overall in the speed category	Erik's car was a little more competitive and took second in this heat; he took 30th out of 38 cars overall though
Despite their struggles on the track, their cars won the Best of Show competition and will get to compete at the District race in April	Here are close-ups of the cars after the race - at least they are fun!
